Ericksonian Hypnosis for individuals

Milton Erickson (1901 - 1980) is probably one of the most famous hypnotists who has ever lived.

He gave his name to a style of therapy known as Ericksonian Hypnosis. Arguably it is the purest form of hypnosis because it just "happens" without any of the usual psychological props.

Ericksonian hypnosis is a very respectful method. There’s no authoritative command. The Therapist has a very high degree of rapport with the subject and uses indirect suggestions. Erickson's sessions would often begin with apparently simple chat or story telling as the subject relaxed. Observing the subject's reactions the Therapist just uses confusion and very unspecific language to get the subject into trance.

Very often the person would find him/herself deeply relaxed and in a suggestive state without even realising that anything had happened. he/she would simply be relaxed and listening to the Therapist.

The indirect and embedded suggestions of Ericksonian hypnosis would bypass the relaxed conscious mind and slip directly into the unconscious where, if phrased correctly, they would be accepted without resistance. The style has been described as "artful vagueness".

Although Ericksonian hypnosis is famous for its subtle inductions: probably the most famous of these are the confusion technique.

To Erickson the unconscious mind was not a repressed Freudian entity but part of everyday life that was always aware.

Where NLP is using a language of precision and details, Hypnosis will exactly do the opposite. Non specific and confusing language will keep conscious mind busy, trying to understand while you will be sending the right message to the unconscious mind directly.

I often use hypnosis in an informal way, using the techniques at certain moments of the session to anchor changes in the unconscious mind of the client.

Ericksonian Hypnosis can help you in many ways as a powerful and very soft and ethic method of therapy. Where ever there are old habits and reflexes that you feel that you can't change consciously, Hypnosis can help.

I would most of the time use Hypnosis non exclusively but combined with NLP and other techniques. Most of the time, the client does not notice changes because it appears to be natural and obvious to be living without the problem.
